Jack Ma yang bernama kecil Ma Yun, lahir pada 10 september 1964 di Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Cina.
Lahir dalam keluarga yang tidak berkecukupan dan selalu diremehkan temannya.
Orangtua Jack merupakan pemusik dan pendongeng tradisional, ayahnya hanya mendapat tunjangan pensiun sekitar Rp 500.000 per bulan untuk menghidupi keluarganya.
Saat beranjak 12 tahun, Jack sudah tertarik pada bahasa inggris dan dia mulai mempelajarinya. Alasannya pada saat itu banyak turis yang datang ke Hangzhou, setiap hari Jack menggunakan sepedanya ke sebuah hotel untuk menemui turis asing. Jack menjalaninya selama 8 tahun, Jack menawarkan diri menjadi pemandu turis secara cuma-cuma karna hanya untuk berlatih bahasa inggris.
Saat sekolah dasar, Jack pernah tidak lulus ujian 2 kali. Kemudian Jack masuk sekolah lanjutan, dan kembali tak lulus ujian sampai 3 kali walau akhirnya lulus.
Jack pun pernah ditolak 3 universitas, kemudian Jack mendaftar lagi ke Universitas Keguruan Hangzhou yaitu institut keguruan dan ilmu pendidikan. Setelah lulus, Jack mendapat tawaran dari universitas lokal untuk mengajar bahasa inggris dengan hanya mendapat bayaran 100 sampai 200 renminbi atau sekitar Rp 114.000 sampai Rp 142.500 per bulan.
Jack pun pernah ditolak 3 universitas, kemudian Jack mendaftar lagi ke Universitas Keguruan Hangzhou yaitu institut keguruan dan ilmu pendidikan. Setelah lulus, Jack mendapat tawaran dari universitas lokal untuk mengajar bahasa inggris dengan hanya mendapat bayaran 100 sampai 200 renminbi atau sekitar Rp 114.000 sampai Rp 142.500 per bulan.
Jack pernah melamar pekerjaan di KFC, disana ada 24 pelamar termasuk dirinya. Namun hanya ada 23 pelamar yang diterima, dan hanya Jack yang lamarannya ditolak.
Suatu hari, saat Jack pertama kali menggunakan komputer, kemudian Jack menulis di mesin pencarian dan dia tidak menemukan sesuatu yang berkaitan dengan negaranya Cina.
Akhirnya Jack mendirikan perusahaan "Alibaba" dibantu oleh temannya.
