Ingvar Kamprad lahir tanggal 30 maret 1926 di Swedia Selatan, Ingvar dibesarkan di sebuah perkebunan bernama Elmtaryd dekat desa kecil Agunnaryd. Meski dibesarkan dari keluarga yang tidak berkecukupan, Ingvar dari kecil selalu bermimpi untuk menjadi seorang pembisnis.
Saat usia 5 tahun, Ingvar mulai menjual korek api ke tetangganya dari pintu ke pintu. Ingvar menjualnya dengan harga yang murah, namun tetap mendapat laba yang cukup. Setelah menjual korek api, Ingvar juga menjual ikan, dekorasi pohon natal, bibit tanaman, hingga alat tulis.
Saat berusia 17 tahun, Ingvar mendapat hadiah sejumlah uang dari ayahnya karna dia mendapat nilai bagus dan berhasil menyelesaikan sekolahnya dengan baik, meskipun Ingvar adalah penderita disleksia (gangguan dalam perkembangan baca dan tulis). Uang tersebut Ingvar gunakan untuk membangun bisnisnya sendiri, yaitu IKEA tahun 1943.
Awalnya Ingvar tidak menjual furnitur dalam 5 tahun pertama IKEA, Ingvar hanya menjual item berukuran kecil untuk rumah seperti frame. IKEA merupakan singkatan dari namanya dan desa tempatnya dilahirkan dan dibesarkan, yaitu Ingvar Kamprad Elmtaryd Agunnaryd.
Ingvar tidak mematok harga yang tinggi dan berusaha menjualnya dengan harga yang murah, sehingga produknya selalu lebih murah dibanding produk serupa milik orang lain. Tahun 1945 IKEA pertama kali memiliki iklan, bisnisnya berhasil menumbuhkan kemampuannya untuk mempengaruhi orang lain.
Pada 1948, sejumlah furnitur diproduksi para pekerja lokal dan Ingvar pun mulai memasukannya sebagai salah satu barang yang dijual IKEA.
Kini IKEA merupakan salah satu perusahaan perabot terbesar didunia, yang berpusat di Delft, Belanda. IKEA memiliki 287 toko di 33 negara.
Pada 2010 IKEA mampu mencapai pendapatan 23,5 miliar euro dan laba bersih 2,7 miliar euro.
